UFCW LOCAL 7 ENDORSES MARK THRUN IN HOUSE DISTRICT 5 RACE

DENVER, April 15, 2010 – The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Local #7 representing nearly 23,000 members has endorsed Mark Thrun in his race to represent House District 5 in the Colorado Legislature.

"We are proud to endorse Mark as our choice in House District 5,” said Kim Cordova, president of UFCW Local #7. “He has shown us his ability to stand up for working families and will make an excellent Representative."

“I’m humbled by the support from the working families represented by the UFCW,” Thrun said.  “I learned as a child that service to your community isn’t something you can just talk about.  It’s something you must live.  UFCW embodies that value, and I’ve always tried to do the same.”

“Through my career and my volunteer efforts, I’ve spent my life trying to improve the lives of others in my community,” Thrun added.  “I can’t tell you how much it means to have earned the trust of the people for whom I’ve worked so hard.  I look forward to fighting on behalf of the issues that face so many of my neighbors in District 5 and I’m honored to be asked to help be the voice of the members of UFCW Local 7 in the State Capitol.”

Thrun recently won 53 percent of the vote at the Denver County Democratic Assembly, assuring him top spot on the August 10 primary ballot.

About Mark Thrun:  Mark is an Infectious Diseases physician working in the Denver Public Health Department. He is Director of the HIV and STD Control Program at Denver Health and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado.

Mark sees patients in both the ID/AIDS Clinic and the Denver Metro Health STD Clinic as well as in the hospital at Denver Health.  He is active in the community, serving on the boards of several local non-profit organizations, and has been a mayoral and gubernatorial appointee to several commissions.

Most important, however, is Mark’s commitment to his home and family.  He lives in the Highlands neighborhood with his partner Geoffrey Bateman.  They’re learning the ins and outs of primary school and skate parks through the eyes of their two sons, Eliot and Zian, ages seven and nine.

House District 5:  House District 5 covers downtown Denver, North Central Denver, Capitol Hill, and the Highlands neighborhood to the northwest.   Many of the city’s major attractions are within the district, including the Denver Mint, all four pro sports teams’ home fields and Lower Downtown (LoDo).
