Mark is an Infectious Diseases physician working in the Denver Public Health Department.  He is the current Director of the HIV and STD Control Program and the Director of a CDC-funded Behavioral and Social Intervention Training and Education program. In this role he oversees grants development, behavioral research, community engagement and education, and policy issues related to sexual health at the health department.

Mark received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Cincinnati in 1995 and was on faculty in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati before returning to training to better hone his infectious diseases skills.  He moved to Colorado in June of 2000 to enter an Infectious Diseases fellowship program at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.

He is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado and sees patients in both the ID/AIDS Clinic and the Denver Metro Health STD Clinic at Denver Health as well as in the hospital at Denver Health.

As Mark’s primary interests have included the prevention and diagnosis of HIV infection and wellness of persons living with HIV, he oversees several HIV prevention, testing, and surveillance programs through the health department.

In 2006, he was elected Co-chair of the National Network of HIV/STD Prevention Training Centers, a CDC-funded network of renowned researchers and educators, as well as Chair of Mayor John Hickenlooper’s HIV Resources Planning Council which makes recommendations to the Mayor’s office on how to distribute approximately $7 million to support HIV-related services.

Mark represents Denver Health on the Colorado Advisory Council on AIDS, previously known as the Governor’s AIDS Council, and serves on Mayor Hickenlooper's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Commission, leading in efforts to evaluate how current health-care concerns impact the GLBT community.

Mark was elected to serve as the current president/chair of two local non-profit Governing Boards: Project Angel Heart, an organization that delivers free meals to people with life threatening illnesses, and the Colorado C3 Roundtable, an organization dedicated to improving coordination and collaboration among local non-profits as it relates to voter education and engagement.

Mark is active in the Democratic Party in Northwest Denver and Capitol Hill, serves as a precinct committee person for precinct 515, and was elected as an alternate delegate in support of Barack Obama to this year’s Democratic National Convention.

He was chosen in 2007 to share some of his thoughts on health care and GLBT equality as a contributing writer to the Colorado Voices column in the Denver Post.

Most importantly, however, is Mark’s commitment to his home and family.  For the past seven years, Mark has lived in the Highlands neighborhood with his partner Geoffrey Bateman.  There they are learning the ins and outs of primary school and skate parks through the eyes of their two sons, Eliot and Zian, ages six and eight, which they are raising with the boys’ two mothers.
