Happy New Year!

A New Year and a time for introspection

Many of us use the arrival of the New Year as an opportunity to assess where we are in our lives, to grow and expand our horizons, and to bring our actions in line with our life goals.

Decades ago, I committed my life to serving my community through my career. Years ago, I committed myself to serving my neighbors in urban Denver though my many volunteer efforts. This year, I committed to serving to my friends and family in district 5 by running for the Colorado state house.

This week, the field of candidates in my campaign expanded to a total of four people. With your help, however, that field will be narrowed to one next year and this doctor, sworn under oath to serving his fellow humans, will be sworn in at the Capitol.

I Voted

On Election Day, I have always worn my “I Voted” sticker with pride.  As it is truly the heart of our democracy, there is nothing quite as fulfilling as officially letting your voice resound though the ballot box.

Though I voted early, I wore my sticker with pride again this week.  We lost a battle for GLBT equality in Maine, but our fight for justice pushed forward in other parts of the country, including right here in Colorado.

A house to call home

This past Friday, after 6 months of working with a mortgage broker, we finally closed on a fixed rate loan for our Denver Highlands home in place of our adjustable rate mortgage.  Despite having secure employment and reasonable debt-to-income ratios, our financing fell though several times.  The process was not just confusing, challenging and painful, but humbling.

Enjoying the summer and staying healthy

It’s been a fantastic summer in Colorado.  For our family, summer means staying up late, hiking in the mountains, roasting marshmallows by the campfire—all those exciting traditions that translate to keeping up with the kids, staying active, and staying healthy.

Friends and supporters,

It has been only two months since I announced my campaign for the Colorado State House District 5, but I have been overwhelmed by your early support.  Many of you have sent wonderful letters and emails and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your kind wishes.  I am proud to count so many fantastic friends.

Family and friends,

As I turn 40 this week, I realize my life has come to a crossroads.  I can continue to serve my neighbors by taking care of them one-by-one as a physician or I can redefine for myself what it means to serve my community.  After years of thought, discussion, and planning, I am opting to redefine my sense of service by asking for the honor of representing my community and my neighbors on a broader level.
